Bethany Farris, CFA
Math Educator and Founder of Mocha Math
About
Ms. Farris is a former NASA researcher, international investment consultant, and college preparatory school academic dean. As a junior, she was hired by her Seattle Public Schools math & science magnet high school to re-teach fellow students who were failing math during a separate class period, and lead the after-school mathematics tutoring program, – including tutoring the children of her teachers and guidance counselor.
Ms. Farris was the first University of Washington student to earn a Bachelors of Science with Honors in Applied and Computational Mathematical Sciences, in the year 2000. After several careers in finance, travel, film & television, publishing and more, she returned to her first love, teaching math, in January of 2014. Recognizing that mathematics is often taught in a way that excludes women, artists, People of Color, the LGBTQIA+ population, rural communities, English Language Learners, and other underserved populations, Ms. Farris makes inclusivity in math instruction an intentional, essential part of her practice. Math is for everyone.
Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Bethany has lived and worked in Madrid, London, the South Island of Aotearoa, Trujillo, Miami, Charlottesville and across the US. She loves Mr. Farris, her dogs, and our National Parks.
